In this tutorial, I am going to show you how to choose complimentary eye shadow colors to complement those beautiful brown eyes! I will do this by recreating the look I’ve created on my model Katie:

Get this look:

Eye Color: To start out Katie’s Eye Color application, use the Vintage Eye Pencil, applying it with the #810 Smudger Brush. Doing this first allows us to create a cream base for the Eye Color we will apply later. Keep in mind, it doesn’t need to be evenly distributed as far as the lineage up in the crease. I chose the Vintage Eye Pencil for this specific application because it has a purple or light warm violet tone, which is complimentary to the amber that is in Katie’s eyes.

After completing the base, use the same Vintage Eye Pencil to create a drop shadow along the bottom of the eye. Use the #210 Angle Liner Brush for this application. I typically start from the outer corner and work my way to the center. Then from the inner corner, I work my way inward, meeting in the middle of the eye.

The first color I have chosen for this Eye Color application is the Voodoo Eye Color. Use the #800 Crease Brush for this application, starting with the outer corner on both eyes. It is important to control the color, applying it from the outer corner working inward. In a light sweeping motion, move the brush back and forth over the Eye Color application; this does a great job of diffusing some of the harsh edges.

The Voodoo Eye Color is a little bit more violet than I would like, so I am going to use a little bit of the Sienna Eye Color with the same #800 Crease Brush to tone it down slightly. I place the Sienna Eye Color pretty much all over the lid to bring out that beautiful amber that is in Katie’s eyes. You can see it warming up very nicely as I stipple the Sienna on the eyelid. Again, go back and forth in the crease of the eyes to diffuse those edges, making it as soft as possible.

Now use a mixed combination of the Voodoo Eye Color and Sienna Eye Color to accentuate the drop shadow on the eye. Make sure to lay this mixture very carefully on top of the Vintage Eye Pencil applied earlier. The combination of these two shadows will create an awesome accentuated drop shadow on the eye.

To diffuse the edge and soften the drop shadow, use the #810 Smudger Brush. The beauty of this brush is that you can use it completely clean, moving around the product that is already on the eye.

Next, use the #300 Shadow Blender Brush to apply the Bronzed Eye Color as a highlight on the upper-inner eyelid. The Bronzed Eye Color is gorgeous and will again bring out the amber in Katie’s eyes. Make sure to only stay on the inner part of the eye and not the whole eye like the other colors that we applied.

Eye Lashes: Load up the #500 Mascara Brush. I like to keep the product mostly on the tip of the brush – it gives me a lot more control. The best thing about this brush is that it is so easy to go from root to tip. On the bottom lashes, lightly dust the mascara with the brush.

Tip: Java Lip Glaze is a perfect finishing touch to that beautiful brown eye shadow application!
