“Be inspired by others and share that inspiration with appreciative, open minds.”

Alan Cutler has been teaching the Beauty 301 course at Make-Up Designory’s New York campus since May 2009. In this capacity, he is responsible for helping students fine-tune their skills for different media, learn the business aspects of freelancing, and build a distinctive, compelling portfolio. He describes his instructional philosophy by saying, “My teaching goal is to nurture and guide a student’s potential. I use proven techniques that always translate well for the camera; however, it’s of utmost importance to be open to a student’s vision. It’s imperative to stay fresh, updated and not pigeonhole oneself into complacency.”

Mr. Cutler has incorporated this approach into his own career, which includes television and film work for programs and productions like the VH-1 Diva Series, Vogue Fashion Awards, Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Television Special, The Sopranos, Fringe, The Miss America Pageant, The Producers, Revolutionary Road and The View – for which he received an Emmy® Award. With each professional make-up assignment he undertakes, he strives to achieve a look for the model or actress that accentuates her features, wardrobe and role. He says that his favorite part of his job is: “seeing my work published, on-air or onscreen, and seeing students excel.”

In his free time, Mr. Cutler stays inspired by researching fashion, checking out seasonal counter launches, enjoying art, and spending time with his family, his students and in nature. He advises aspiring make-up artists to consider the long-term as well as short-term aspects of their careers. “There is no better, more satisfying profession for a creative soul than being a make-up artist. But be smart and have long-term goals. Think about your future in the industry and for when you get close to retirement age. Does it include a make-up line? Training? Consulting? Enjoy the great money you can make as a make-up artist now, but remember to invest in your future as well.”
