For new students arriving at our campuses in Los Angeles and New York, public transportation can be a practical and affordable method of commuting to school and around the city. In Los Angeles, you should be prepared for California-style public transit, which like the Southern California lifestyle can be more laid-back compared to other cities. New York is served by a wide range of public transportation options, which are comprehensive and widely used by residents.

Los Angeles:

Buses run on most major streets and avenues. They generally run every 35 to 45 minutes – even during rush hour. The cost for the Metro System is $1.50 one-way per line, $6.00 for a Day Pass (good on all regional buses and the subways). Alternatively, you can purchase a Tap Card, which allows weekly or monthly access to the Metro System. The Tap Card can be recharged at any subway station.

You find all the details about Los Angeles bus schedules at www.metro.net, which includes the Metro Subway Lines (Red, Blue, Green and Gold).

To get to Downtown Burbank, you will be interested in Bus Lines 96, 155, and 183. These are the major lines that run to and from the Red Line Subway Stations at Universal City and North Hollywood, as well as from Downtown LA, Sherman Oaks, Studio City, Encino, Van Nuys, and North Hollywood. From Glendale, you may be able to take the 94 or the 183.

For those of you who will be commuting from more distant locations of Southern California (Corona, San Bernardino, Orange County, and general points in-between), the Metrolink Trains (www.metrolinktrains.com) are available by changing to the Red Line Subway at Union Station. Those of you in Ventura or Apple Valley need only stop and Downtown Burbank. The cost of the Metrolink is based on the number of stations you must pass to reach your destination -- generally is it $8.00 to Burbank from Union Station (one-way).

If this is your first time into LA, I recommend flying into Burbank Airport (Bob Hope Airport). The Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) is at least 45-60 minutes away from Burbank. Burbank/ Bob Hope Airport (BUR) allows you to take a taxi (its only 10 minutes to the school) the Metrolink train (one station to Downtown Burbank and walk 1 and 1/2 blocks to the school), or the Bus 122 (to Hollywood) a few blocks to Magnolia Avenue to the Bus 183 to Burbank or to Glendale.

Students who are planning on using a car as their primary means of transportation to and from school may purchase parking permits from the city of Burbank for $50.00 per calendar month. Please download the LA Campus Catalog for current information.

New York:

For everyone coming to the Big Apple, the world famous NYC Subway System (www.mta.info) reaches from JFK Airport, La Guardia Airport, Brooklyn, and Queens and to Manhattan. If this is your first time into NYC, both JFK and La Guardia have direct access to the Subway System.

The New York Campus is only three blocks from the Canal Street Station. The fare for a subway or local bus ride is $2.25; the fare for an express bus ride is $5.50. New Jersey is also within reach via the Path Train (panynj.gov) to the WTC.

Once on Manhattan, Metro Buses are readily available. Metro Cards are available at all stations, and allow you to choose a number of specific rides (station to station) or to purchase monthly access.

Most students prefer to take public transportation as opposed to bringing their own car onto Manhattan for class. Parking is very expensive, and even harder to find.
